The Multiphone Operating company built 1,000 of the music machines and put them in prestigious locations, just to collect the nickels. The company was out of business in three years, said Baker, who has restored three of the primitive jukeboxes.

The semiannual show is the largest of its kind in the world, boasting dealers from around the world with high-quality jukeboxes, advertising, arcade games and cash registers.

There was so much of the stuff that it spilled out of the main exhibition hall at the Pheasant Run Resort MegaCenter in St. Charles, boogied its way into a nearby annex, and doo-wopped out to a parking lot crammed with trucks from throughout the Midwest that had come to sell even more curios.

Other trucks were there to start hauling containers of the things back to such locales as Norway and Australia, where today`s appetite for yesterday apparently is as insatiable as it is here in these United States.

'We`re the best-kept secret in Chicago,' said promoter Steve Gronowski, who guessed that 6,000 to 7,000 people would attend the three-day event ending Sunday, that there were more than 250 dealers present, and that some of those dealers came from Germany, France, Australia, Italy, and England-in part for the purpose of furnishing the Jukebox Saturday Nights of their lands.

'This is the biggest show there is for jukeboxes. People come here from all over the world,' said Joe Croghan, of Harpers Ferry, W. Va., who loaded more than a quarter-million bucks worth of Wurlitzers into two trucks and a trailer so he could reap rewards in Illinois (one of his jukeboxes, he said, sold for $35,000.)
