John Quincy Adams Presidential $1 Dollar Coins Launched into Circulation by United States Mint
The United States Mint launched John Quincy Adam $1 coins into circulation yesterday, May 15. The dollar coin marks the sixth released since the Presidential $1 Coin Program began in 2007, and the second for this year.
United States Mint Acting Deputy Director Dan Shaver commented,
"$1 coins are great for use in everyday transactions, and the John Quincy Adams Presidential $1 Coin is also an educational tool. As Americans use the coin in commerce, we hope it prompts them to learn about this President’s contributions to our great Nation.”
John Quincy Adam’s life was one of distinction and commitment to public service.
- Harvard graduate and lawyer
- Was married to Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams
- Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1802, and six years later President Madison appointed him Minister to Russia
- Was James Monroe’s Secretary of State, arranging with England for the joint occupation of the Oregon country, and obtained from Spain the cession of the Floridas
- Helped formulate the Monroe Doctrine
He continued his public service after his Presidency too.
- He was the first President who was the son of a President (John Adams)
- He was the sixth president, serving one term from 1825-1829
- Served for 17 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, after his Presidency
- Introduced many petitions to abolish slavery and the slave trade
- Died on Feb. 23, 1848, two days after collapsing on the House floor from a stroke
The U.S. Mint reports that more than one billion Presidential coins have been produced to date.
Four coins honoring President Washington, John Adams, Jefferson and Madison were issued in 2007. James Monroe Presidential $1 coins were released into circulation in February.
Two more coins will follow this year — Andrew Jackson $1s will be released August 14 and Martin Van Buren $1s on November 13.
Presidential coins are not always easy to find or exchange even in banks. However, John Quincy Adam $1 coins may also be purchased directly from the Mint.
