The $1 coin was a special one-time-only issue in 1976. It was the first circulating commemorative Dollar coin.   The obverse includes the portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower that first appeared of Dollar coins in 1971.  It also features the dual dates “1776 • 1976” to span the 200 years since the Declaration of Independence.  The special reverse design depicts the Liberty Bell and the Moon to symbolize 200 years from the era of the American Revolution to the era of space travel.
 
The $2 bill is America’s first and only commemorative bank note design.  It was originally issued in the Series of 1976 for the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.  The front features the portrait of Thomas Jefferson, who wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and served as America’s third President from 1801-1809.  The back depicts the painting “The Signing of the Declaration of Independence” by John Trumbull.
