INDIAN HEAD GOLD COIN

COIN DESIGN

The $2.50 and $5 gold coins are of the same design, while the $10 gold coin went through a revamp. This $5 gold coin features a Native American chief wearing a headdress. Although the headdress is not historically accurate, it is a prominent feature on the early US coins featuring the natives. Additionally, the obverse features 13 stars, the year of mintage, and inscription "LIBERTY." BLP, the initials for the coin's designer Bela Lyon Pratt, are above the mintage date. The reverse showcases a majestic and mighty eagle—perched upon arrows with an olive branch in his talons. The olive branch and arrows symbolize war and peace. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "IN GOD WE TRUST." 

LIBERTY HEAD GOLD DOLLAR

This gorgeous gold dollar has Lady Liberty with her hair in a bun and a tiara on top of her head. Also, 13 stars encircle her. The laurel wreath on the reverse features berries and holly. The wreath surrounds a roman numeral, and showcases the date of mintage and the inscription "DOLLAR."

INDIAN PRINCESS GOLD COIN

The “small head” gold Indian Head Princess was the first of the series to feature Lady Liberty with a native feathered headdress. A new open wreath encompassed agricultural elements like wheat, corn, tobacco, and cotton—much like America's early farming days. Both this and the “large head” coin was a design by James Longacre. These coins are a favorite among collectors despite their poor striking, as they carry a deep historical value and significance. In 1856, the “small” head coin was redesigned to allow for better striking of the gold coin. The designer, Longacre, expanded Liberty's head, straightened her headdress, and changed her hair. This was to allow the coin's metal to flow more evenly into the dies of the coin. Most were fruitful in improvement. Additionally, the coin's portrait became flatter, and the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" moved closer to the coin's border.  

HENRY FORD

In 1914, Henry Ford decided to start what is known as the greatest revolution in rewarding workers. He doubled the pay of his employees to $5 a day while reducing their workday from 9 to 8 hours. These $5 Indian Head gold coins were essentially a day of pay for the new "highly-paid" workers and of high face value at the time.

ROOSEVELT'S ORDER

In 1933, Roosevelt signed an order for Americans to turn in their gold. Therefore, gold coins before 1933 are scarce and highly valuable to collectors and investors alike. Additionally, the Indian Head gold coins are the only circulated US coin with recessed design. Although hard to find in mint condition, these coins will continue to remain in value and make an excellent investment.
